Clay County, Texas was created on December 24, 1857. It was named in
honor of Henry Clay, distinguished American Statesman, Secretary of
State, Speaker of the House of Representatives, and U.S. Senator who
was the author of the Compromise of 1850 which created the present
boundaries of the State of Texas.
The Clay County 1890 Jail Museum Heritage Center underwent extensive modification during 2009, adding a steel framework to stabilise the structure. The facility is now open to the public and welcoming visitors.

When the pioneers settled into the
fertile lands which came to be known
as Clay County, they were not thinking
about preserving their heritage. They
were strongly focused on taming a
wild land, filled with promise yet laden
with adversity. The unrelenting
pioneer spirit County.
The museum hosts hundreds of
visitors annually from across the
country and around the world,
each interested in catching a
glimpse of the past and for a
moment experiencing the
heritage that paved the way for
modern day Texas.
The most significant artifact
reminiscent of the county’s early
beginnings is the 1890 jail located
in Henrietta. For over a century,
this magnificent structure has
served as a reminder of the early
struggles of another time. In the
mid 1990s the abandoned structure
was restored and the Clay County
1890 Jail Museum Heritage Center
gave the county’s history a home.
Inside, stories of triumph and
tragedy, pride and perseverance,
discovery and dreams have been
woven together to educate,
entertain and demonstrate the
significance of this
northTexas county.
