Welcome to the beautifully restored Clay County 1890 Jail/Museum, maintained and
operated by the Clay County Historical Society. The jail operated from 1890 to 1973,
and included a residence for the Sheriff. Today, all of the rooms in the residence, and
most areas of the jail, have been restored and are filled with many exhibits of this era.
These include a magnificent collection of old photographs of people and places in
Clay County, furniture, artifacts, clothing and numerous items from long closed stores
and shops.

See the recreated Doctor's Office, and an exhibit of the Churches of Clay County.

Visit an area dedicated to the men and women of all branches of the Military who
served their country and Clay County.

See the "Drunk Tank" where over-indulgent cowboys sobered up while waiting their
turn with the Judge.

Look up at  the "Gallows" (never used) where the ultimate fate awaited those convicted
of the most Heinous crimes.

See other exhibits too numerous to mention.
Stop by and visit, walk-ins are welcome,
and enjoy a personally guided tour of
the museum, or make an appointment
for larger groups.

Hundreds have toured the Jail/Museum
over the years.

You'll leave with a greater appreciation
of the life and times of the pioneers and
the hardships they endured.
